AI and insurance choices

Can Muse buy your insurance? What New Zealand consumers should check

An AI agent such as Muse can help gather insurance information, organise quotes and carry out parts of an application. Deciding whether to buy still requires the relevant policy wording, your final acceptance terms and confirmation of when cover starts. A US car insurance saving offers an interesting example; New Zealand health, life and income protection policies need their own comparison.

What does the reported $3,500 insurance saving show?

In September 2026, Joe Devoy posted that Meta Muse had found cheaper car insurance with equivalent cover, bought the replacement and cancelled his old policy. He reported an annual saving of about US$3,500. Business Insider Japan covered the account. It is a user report: the public material does not provide the complete documents needed to independently verify equivalent cover, acceptance or the full year's actual saving. The appeal is practical. Comparing websites, repeating forms and following up quotes takes time. When considering the same approach yourself, ask what changed alongside the price.

This guide discusses general methods for using AI assistance. As at 27 September 2026, we have not verified Muse registration or insurance transaction availability in New Zealand.

Give the agent a useful comparison brief

“Find the cheapest insurance” leaves important choices open. Tell the agent which cover you want to retain, what out-of-pocket costs you could manage and which differences need to be highlighted.

For health insurance, that might include relevant specialist, diagnostic and surgical benefits, limits, excesses and exclusions. For income protection, separate the waiting period, payment period, work-capacity definition and income calculation. Leave missing information marked as unconfirmed.

A polished table still needs checking. A product webpage may omit conditions that appear in your schedule, endorsements or final underwriting letter.

Give the agent a useful comparison brief
QuestionWhat to request from the agent
Where did it search?Providers, channels, search date and unsuccessful quote requests
Are prices comparable? The same currency, insured people and payment period, with fees and discounts identified
What changes?Differences in benefits, limits, excesses, definitions, exclusions and timing
What supports each answer?Document name, version and page or clause
What is unresolved?Missing acceptance terms, conflicting documents and questions for written confirmation

Identify the stage of each offer

An estimate, a submitted application, conditional acceptance and cover confirmed in force are different stages. Label them explicitly.

AIA's published application guidance, for example, describes acceptance and first-premium requirements and says an application may be accepted with conditions or exclusions. Before proceeding, ask the agent to show the final conditions and outstanding steps. If its summary differs from the insurer's document, resolve the discrepancy with the insurer.

Make cancellation a separate decision

The FMA cautions consumers to understand the differences when switching and to retain existing insurance until replacement cover is in place. Health changes also need attention when comparing how a new policy treats pre-existing conditions. Source: FMA insurance guidance

Before cancelling, obtain written answers to these questions:

Do not assume a cooling-off period restores your previous position. Cancelling the new contract and reinstating the old one require separate checks.

  • When does the replacement start, and are any conditions still outstanding?
  • Which benefits or terms are added, reduced or excluded?
  • How and when does the old policy end, and are there fees or refunds?
  • How should existing events, claims in progress or planned treatment be handled?

Illustrative scenario: a lower monthly quote

A policyholder asks an agent to organise renewal options. A replacement estimate costs less, but the health acceptance column says “underwriting pending”. The person keeps the quote, requests final terms and asks the existing insurer about an excess adjustment.

Once the documents are available, they compare the cover they need and the costs they could carry. A switch remains an option if the differences are acceptable and the replacement and transition arrangements are confirmed.

This fictional scenario illustrates a process and does not describe a real client. Decisions and results depend on personal circumstances, policy terms, underwriting and the insurer's decision.

What should you ask an adviser after using AI?

Bring the comparison and unresolved questions. Ask the adviser to explain material differences against your needs, which products they can consider, the agreed service scope and how they are paid. A recommendation to replace cover deserves scrutiny whoever makes it. Keep the reasoning and supporting documents. Our adviser disclosure guide explains useful questions about scope and remuneration.

Common questions

Q: Does a cheaper Muse quote mean equivalent cover? A: Price and product names cannot establish that. Compare the complete wording and personal acceptance terms, including exclusions, excesses, limits and benefit conditions.

Q: Can I have AI switch my insurance every six months? A: A more controlled arrangement is to schedule checks and reminders, then decide on each switch separately using current information and written terms.

Q: Does an AI comparison find the cheapest policy in the whole market? A: Without evidence of full market coverage, its conclusion is limited to the quotes obtained. Request the searched channels and missing results.

Q: Can I cancel after the agent submits my application? A: Submission alone does not confirm cover is in force. Check acceptance, commencement and transition arrangements before deciding when to cancel.
